Flight

Birds are near and dear to Jean Paul Riopelle. Pay homage to his love for them by creating an animation that brings a bird to life.

Activité 1 : Instructions for playing the game online

Draw 3 images of the same bird with its wings in different positions.

  1. Choose a bird in the image gallery;
  2. Make a rough sketch of the bird using your own style of line-making. Letting your creativity flow is more important than creating an exact replica;
  3. Download and save this first bird under a name like bird1;
  4. Follow steps 1 and 2 again without tracing its wings.
  5. Draw its wings in a new position, such as pointing upwards as though the bird were in flight;
  6. Download and save the second bird under a name like bird2;
  7. Follow steps 1 and 2 again without tracing its wings.
  8. Draw its wings in a new position, such as pointing downwards as though the bird were in flight;
  9. Download and save the third bird under a name like bird3;
  10. Use these 3 images to create an animated GIF by using online software like MakeaGif.
  11. If you wish, share your creations through the RIO Gallery.

Activité 2 : Instructions for playing the game on paper

  1. Create a flipbook;
  2. Using an old notebook or book, draw a bird following Jean Paul’s style on the bottom right corner of the last page;
  3. On the page just before it, check to see if the first bird is visible (is the sheet of paper slightly translucent like tracing paper?) and trace the same bird, adding a small amount of movement in its wings;
  4. Repeat this step until you have at least 20 pages with bird drawings;
  5. Flip through the sheets quickly to watch the bird fly;
  6. Display the flipbooks in the classroom;
  7. If you wish, share your creations through the RIO Gallery.
