Flight

Birds are near and dear to Jean Paul Riopelle. Pay homage to his love for these birds, here is an invitation to create an animated GIF of a bird taking flight.

To fully understand the game, read all the instructions.

Activité 1 : Instructions for playing the game online

  1. You have 15 minutes to complete the game;
  2. You have to draw 5 pictures of the same bird where the wings are not in the same position in order to simulate flight;
  3. Choose a bird in the image gallery;
  4. Take inspiration from this bird by using your own style. Use wide lines;
  5. For each new image, copy the previous bird by changing the position of the wings;
  6. Download the animation;
  7. View your animated GIF in a presentation software or on a web browser;
  8. If you wish, share your creations through the RIO Gallery.

Activité 2 : Instructions for playing the game on paper

  1. Create a flipbook;
  2. Using an old notebook or book, draw a bird following Jean Paul’s style on the bottom right corner of the last page;
  3. On the page just before it, check to see if the first bird is visible (is the sheet of paper slightly translucent like tracing paper?) and trace the same bird, adding a small amount of movement in its wings;
  4. Repeat this step until you have at least 20 pages with bird drawings;
  5. Flip through the sheets quickly to watch the bird fly;
  6. Display the flipbooks in the classroom;
  7. If you wish, share your creations through the RIO Gallery.
