Unique sculpture-fountain work by Riopelle (1923–2002), La Joute, 1969–1970 (cast around 1974) is a sculptural ensemble that has established itself in the Quartier international de Montréal. First installed in the Olympic Park, on the occasion of the 1976 Summer Games, La Joute has been deployed, since 2004, on the square dedicated to the artist. Gathered around the “Tour de la Vie”, the thirty bronze elements represent some of the animal and mythical figures that marked the childhood and imagination of the great artist, including the Owl, the Fish, the Bear and the Dog. Since its reinstallation, the work has included a ring of fire, as Riopelle had originally imagined.
